This ride is a
fundraiser for the US Forest Service to help with the cost of maintaining horse
trails. NEW RIDE SITE!!! If you thought last year’s ride was pretty, wait until
you see this one!
Ride Camp: Camp is a
beautiful, large, open meadow in the White River National Forest west of the
Flattops Wilderness Area at 9800 feet.
Good road access and plenty of horse water. Bring your own people water. Certified Weed Free Hay is Required.
The Forest Service will be present at this event to ensure all conditions of the
special use permit are met. If you
come without certified weed free hay you may be fined. Certified weed free hay will be
available for purchase at $10 per bale if you contact me in advance to let
me know the number of bales you will require. Pets are allowed. Dogs do not have to be on a leash but
they must be under verbal control at all times. Due to the elevation, nights are
cool. Bring your horse blankets and
also insect spray. We are in the
mountains so also come prepared for you and your horse in case it
rains.
Meals: Ride entries for
the 50, 25, and 14 Mile Fun Ride include lunch Saturday and Sunday. Ride entries
for the 50 and 25 Mile Ride include dinner Saturday evening. Additional lunch
and dinner prices are $6 and $10 respectively.
Trails: All vet checks
will be out of camp. Certified weed
free hay and carrots will be provided for the horses and food and drinks for the
riders at the out-of-camp vet checks. Trails include single track, two-track,
forest service 4x4 road, and a few miles of lightly graveled forest service road
at the start and finish of the ride.
You will ride through beautiful spruce, pine, and aspen forests with
numerous meadows and many water crossings.
Lots of water and grass on the trail. This is not a flat ride. Wildlife you may have the
opportunity to view includes elk, deer, moose, beavers, eagles, hawks, etc. We recommend shoes or boots. Pads are not necessary if you ride
accordingly.
Start
Times: 50-milers will
start at 7:00 am each day, 25 milers at 8:00 each day, and 14 mile fun ride will
start at 10:00 am each day. The
pre-ride vet check will take place the day before each ride starting at about
4:30 pm followed by the pre-ride meeting at about 6:30 pm. Participants in the fun ride can vet
their horses in either the night before the ride or in the morning before the
ride. A mini pre-ride meeting will
be held in the morning each day of the fun ride for participants that choose to
come up to the ride that morning.
Directions: To help minimize the introduction of
weed seeds into the pristine meadows at ride camp, the Forest Service is asking
your cooperation to wash the undercarriage of your rigs in either Newcastle or
Meeker. See directions
below.

the 4-way stop, you will reach a “T” intersection. Go right onto CR 226. Stay left at the “Y” intersection. At
6.45 miles turn right onto Buford Road (CR 245). There is a Forest Service sign for West
Elk just before this intersection.
At 10.8 miles the pavement changes to dirt and you are entering the White
River National Forest. You will
cross a cattle guard at 19.3 miles and at 24.65 miles you will reach a major
intersection with the Bar HL Road.
Stay on CR 245. At 26.3 and
27.65 miles you will cross cattle guards.
At 31.1 miles turn right onto FR601. Ride camp is about ˝ mile down this
road.
From the
east take I-70 to
Newcastle. Take Exit 105
“Newcastle” and go right to the 4-way stop intersection. After washing under
undercarriages of rigs, return to 4-way stop. Follow directions from the 4-way stop to
ride camp.
From Meeker
(Truck Wash at Hwy 13 & 9th St.) Take State Hwy.
13 east out of Meeker for about 1 mile.
Turn right onto County Road 8 for 18 miles until you come to a bridge on
the right and a sign for 7 Lakes Lodge.
Turn right onto CR 10and proceed on this road for 1.5 miles to a stop
sign. Turn right onto the
Buford-Newcastle (FR245). Travel up
this road for an additional 13.3 miles to the Hiner Spring sign. Turn left onto FR601. Ride camp is about ˝ mile down this
road.
From Craig
take State Hwy.
13 south towards Meeker. (Please wash your undercarriages of rigs at a truck
wash before leaving Craig or go into Meeker first and use truck wash.) Just
before you reach Meeker, turn left onto County Road 8 for 18 miles until you
come to a bridge on the right. Turn
right and proceed on this road for 1.5 miles to a stop sign. Turn right onto the Buford-Newcastle
Road (FR245). Travel up this road
for 8 miles to the Hiner Spring sign.
Turn left onto FR601. Ride
camp is about ˝ mile down this road.
Before you leave
home, please call to make sure there are no last minute changes in the
location/directions to ride camp.
No money required with entry, but we really appreciate pre-entries or at
least letting us know that you are coming so that we can plan to have adequate
food, water, and drinks for the riders.
Thanks.

HORSE &
RIDER I AND II ENDURANCE RIDES RELEASE FORM
I, the
undersigned, do hereby state that I have read and understand the following: I have entered the Horse & Rider
Endurance Rides and agree to abide by all their rules as well as those of the
AERC. I understand that endurance
riding can be a hazardous activity which often involves being in remote areas
for long periods of time in which there may be natural and manmade hazards which
ride management can neither anticipate nor eliminate. I understand that I am riding the event
at MY OWN RISK and will assume FULL RESPONSIBILITY for my safety and the safety
of the animal I am riding.
I acknowledge
the fact that, while I am on my own, my horse is under veterinary supervision,
and I agree to abide by the veterinarian’s decisions, as at this ride the
veterinarian’s word is FINAL! I
will not argue, debate, or dispute the vet’s instructions. I take full responsibility for the
payment of any vet bill if my horse is in need of treatment. I do understand that abuse of the horse
is strictly forbidden.
In addition, I
and my heirs, executor, and administrator will hold AERC and officers thereof,
any member of the Horse & Rider Endurance Rides ride management and officers
thereof, workers, volunteers, the United States Forest Service, and all property
owners/tenants whose land I ride/walk over, absolutely blameless for any injury
or loss to myself or my horse which occurs due to my participation, and free
them from all liability for such injury or loss.

RELEASE
(Read carefully;
this pertains to you. Ask if you
have questions. This is a legal
document.)
As a participant
in the Horse & Rider Endurance Rides, I understand that my safety and the
safety of other participants and workers are dependent upon my own ability and
judgment. I understand that
endurance riding involves riding on or near pavement, sometimes in traffic,
being in the mountains and/or desert for long periods, out of communication, in
strange places, and possibly under adverse weather conditions. I further understand that judgment,
could result in injury to myself or my horse. I understand that professional medical
attention is not available on the trail, and that considerable delays are likely
to be encountered in rescue and treatment of injured riders and their
horses. I understand that horseback
riding involves some risk and I ride at my own risk. I agree to take full responsibility for
my safety and well being, for my horse’s safety and well being, and for the
safety of all other participants and their animals. Furthermore, I agree not to hold the US
Forest Service, ride management, workers, volunteers, or land owners/tenants
whose property we may cross responsible for losses or injuries that I might
suffer on, or in connection with, the ride. My family is aware that I am
participating in this occasionally dangerous sport.
I agree to obey
the rules of the AERC and the rules of the Horse & Rider Endurance
Rides.
I give consent
for medical treatment for myself if I am unable to give informed consent. The consent I give includes any x-ray
examination, anesthetic, medical or surgical diagnosis or treatment deemed
advisable by and rendered under the general supervision of a physician or
surgeon, if I am unable to give informed consent. I agree that neither the physician,
surgeon, nor any organization involved assumes any financial responsibility for
acting under this authority granted by me.
I agree to give consent for medical treatment of any junior or minor
participant in the ride if I have signed as Parent/Guardian of that junior or
minor and I am unable to give informed consent for that treatment. This consent for junior/minor signed for
below includes the entire medical treatment and release of financial
responsibility outlined above.
I have read,
understand, and agree with the conditions of this release.
